RAF Hawkinge on the south eastern tip of Kent was Fighter Commands most forward airfield and therefore vital to front line defences. The images depicts Spitfires of 610 Squadron scrambling from Hawkinge's grass runway in August 1940, to engage incoming raiders, with their gunports covered with scarlet tape. With aerial battles raging from low level to 20,000 feet they will be in the frey within minutes.
From a small edition of 40 copies only this example has an extra large remarque painted in acrylic and initialled by the artist. He has also signed and numbered the giclee and added descriptive text. To complete the presentation it has been mounted with rare original signatures, from the artists collection, who participated in the Battle of Britain and achieved "Ace" status shooting down five or more enemy aircraft.
Signed and numbered by Nicholas Watts
Including a unique colour remark of Alan Wright in his Spitfire Mk1, this additional original colour sketch finishes this amazing piece of history.
